Professor Kefah Mokbel is Honorary Consultant Breast Surgeon at St George's Hospital, London and Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery at the Brunel Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics.  He provides private reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery at the London Breast Institute, where he is Lead Breast Surgeon.

A world-renowned breast surgeon

Recently ranked number one breast expert in London  and among the top 25 breast cancer experts worldwide by the American website Expertscape, Professor Mokbel is a highly skilled reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the breast, including breast cancer, benign breast conditions and gynaecomastia.  He is regularly approached to comment on matters concerning breast cancer and breast surgery by the national and international press and media, and has featured in top doctor guides produced by Tatler magazine and The Times magazine.

Expert reconstructive breast surgery

The mainstay of breast cancer treatment is surgery to remove the affected area of breast tissue.  Depending on the size and nature of the tumour, this may be just a section of breast tissue (lumpectomy or wide local excision) or all of the breast tissue, usually together with the overlying skin and nipple (mastectomy).  The lymph nodes in the armpit may also be removed.

Women undergoing lumpectomy do not usually need reconstructive surgery.  In cases where it is necessary to remove a quarter of the breast tissue (quadrantectomy), the resulting dent can sometimes be filled in using a flap of tissue from the back or, for women with larger breasts, a breast reduction procedure may be possible to reshape both the affected breast and the unaffected breast.

Modern reconstructive techniques can now produce good cosmetic outcomes for women who have undergone mastectomy.  Reconstruction can take place immediately following surgery (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction) and is tailored to the individual.  A number of separate steps may be involved to achieve the final cosmetic result.  The three main types of reconstruction are:

  • Reconstruction using an implant that gradually stretches remaining skin and muscle (tissue expansion)
  • Reconstruction using an implant and a tissue flap from the back or abdomen
  • Reconstruction using a tissue flap alone

A highly experience reconstructive breast surgeon, Professor Mokbel always puts the patient at the heart of the decision-making process to find the procedure that best suits her individual needs and wishes.  At consultation, he is happy to provide photographs of patients who have already undergone similar procedures and, if required, can arrange a meeting with a patient who has had reconstructive breast surgery.

Cosmetic breast surgery in London

There are a number of reasons why women seek cosmetic breast surgery, including breasts that are too big, pendulous or heavy, breasts that are too small, breasts that are of unequal size and breasts that have lost shape, contour or size as a result of breast feeding or ageing.  Such issues can lead to problems with confidence and self-esteem, as well as, in the case of overly large breasts, neck and back pain.

Professor Mokbel offers the full range of cosmetic breast procedures, including breast enlargement (augmentation), breast reduction and breast uplift (mastoplexy).  Also providing a specialist second opinion service, he is a recognised expert and advisor in cases of clinical negligence involving breast surgery.
