Mr Richard has a specialist interest in the treatment of children and carries out his main NHS practice
at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. For his private practice Mr Richard sees children at Spire Parkway, or Droitwich Spa BMI Hospital and carries out all children’s surgery at The Priory, Edgbaston.
The majority of plastic surgery cases that Mr Richard carries out on children are facial reconstructive
procedures, for example facial deformities or birth defects such as cleft lip and palate. Ear surgery
for prominent ears is also a common operation undertaken in childhood.
Mr Richard also runs a supra-regional multidisciplinary facial paralysis service for children at
Birmingham Children’s Hospital and he would be happy to see children privately if the parents choose
to do so.
Treatment of facial deformities
Facial deformities in children are often a result of birth defects, although they can also be caused by
trauma or the treatment of tumours. Children with facial deformities may suffer psychological
consequences as well as functional problems and often undergo surgery to improve these features.
