Videsh Raut: Consultant Orthopaedic Hip & Knee Surgeon, Lancashire; Hon Professor at Edge Hill University, an experienced consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon offers the latest treatments for sports injuries, arthroscopic knee surgery, hip and knee replacement. He performs computer aided surgery for complex knees and uses ceramics for young patients.


Since 1996, Prof Raut has been working as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the internationally renowned Wrightington Hospital and the Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Trust (Chorley).  


Wrightington Hospital is a centre of excellence in the treatment of musculo-skeletal disease. It was here that Professor Sir John Charnley pioneered hip replacement surgery involving the techniques of low-friction arthroplasty and also innovative advances to counter post-operative infection. The first ever hip-replacement operations were performed at Wrightington in the early 1960s.


He is Hon. Professor at Edge Hill University where he runs the Masters Degree Programme in Orthopaedics (MChOrth), and has been nominated by the British Hip Society to act as a Specialist Advisor to NICE (National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence).  He is appointed Expert member on North West Ethics Committee for UK, and he is Academic Advisor to University of Manchester.

His personal outcomes

Prof Raut published his personal results of Total Hip Replacement surgery in the British Journal of Bone & Jt. Surgery in 2005, which showed a 100% survivorship of the artificial joint at 9 years for aseptic loosening.  His personal results of Total Knee Replacement surgery have been  published in International Orthopaedica in 2007 which showed a 97.04% survivorship of the artificial joint at 9 years.  These were further updated and published in Journal of Orthopaedics  in 2012 showing a 93.4% survivorship at 14 years with a maximum follow-up of 20 years.  He has recently published the results of his Personal technique of Bunion Surgery in the American Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery showing 96% good results.

Prof Raut qualified in 1996. His qualifications include:


Prof Raut trained in the UK as a Registrar in Orthopaedics at Oswestry and Senior Registrar at Birmingham.  He undertook the following Surgical Fellowships:

  • A three-and-a-half year Senior Surgical Fellowship in Primary & Revision Arthroplasty of the Hip and Knee with Professor Wroblewski at "The Centre for Hip Surgery", Wrightington Hospital.

  • A Clinical Fellowship in Allograft Reconstruction (Hips & Knees) under Professor Allan Gross at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada.

  • A Visiting Fellowship (Hips and Knees) at Mayo Clinic & Massachusetts General Hospital in U.S.A.
