Mr Sudhir G Rao FRCS(Ed), FRCS(Orth), MCh(Orth), DNB (Orth), Consultant Orthopaedic and Sports surgeon has a special interest in Knee, Hip and Shoulder surgery and does weekly specialist clinics at hospitals in London (BMI Blackheath Hospital) and Kent (BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital, BMI Sloane Hospital). Mr Rao is happy to see self funded and insured patients. His NHS practice is at Princess Royal Hospital & Queen Mary’s Hospital part of South London Healthcare NHS Trust. In addition to being fluent in English, he speaks fluent Hindi, Kannada and conversational Gujarati, Marathi.

     

Mr Rao qualified in Mumbai (MBBS) at the Seth GS Medical College (1985) and after a 3 year training scheme passed the Master of Surgery in Orthopaedics exam. His UK training was in the Wessex Orthopaedic Training Scheme and he was awarded the MCh(Orthopaedics) by the University of Liverpool in 1991. He passed the FRCS(Ed) and FRCS(Glas) exam and after Senior Registrar training in the North West was awarded the FRCS(Orthopaedics) in 1996. He has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports surgeon since 1997.

     

In 1993 he did a knee fellowship in Manchester, UK and a hip fellowship in 1994. He has had specialist training in knee and Sports Injuries in Boston, USA (1996) and in shoulder surgery at the University of Washington (1996) during visiting fellowships before starting as a consultant in 1997.

     

Since 1997 he has had specialist Knee clinics, Hip Clinics, Shoulder clinics and sports clinics both in the NHS and privately. He has carried out hundreds of Knee arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, multi-ligament and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, Hip Arthroscopy and Femoro-Acetabular impingement (FAI) surgery in addition to performing a hundreds of Knee replacements, Hip replacements, Hip resurfacing and a full range of arthroscopic Shoulder operations including joint replacement and the reverse shoulder (Delta) replacement over the last 14 years.

Mr Rao keeps up to date by regularly attending the American Academy meetings and British Knee and Shoulder meetings. He is able to offer a very high quality of care, that is up to date, focused on the patients activity and using his skills is able to draw on a range of treatments that is focused on the patients needs and requirements whether it is injuries or arthritis or sports advice.

  

He works closely with an excellent team of physiotherapists, osteopaths, podiatrists and colleagues who are focused on rehabilitation after surgery helping rapid recovery of function.

  • High tibial osteotomy for treatment of osteoarthritis in young patients – Thesis MS(orthopaedics) – currently assessing the Tomofix device for stabilization.

  • Anatomic ACL reconstruction – anatomical issues on hamstring graft positioning and radiology. Currently assessing Anatomical ACL results using endobutton, RCI screws for fixation with staple.

  • A surgical technique for correction of stiffness after total knee replacement – A rare complication that requires infrequent surgery – surgical technique described.

  • Hip arthroscopy – for extra-articular and intra-articular hip problems. Investigating and innovating in this exciting new developing flield.

  • Analysing the painful total knee replacement – investigating the reasons for poor results
