Mr Rhys Thomas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, specialising in the treatment of foot and ankle conditions such as ankle arthritis, ankle instability, ankle sprain, big toe arthritis, bunions and sesamoid problems. Rhys has a particular interest in sports related foot and ankle conditions, having treated many international and recreational athletes.
Rhys Thomas, BSc(Hons), MBBS(Lond), FRCS(Tr&Orth), FFSEM(UK), is a fellowship-trained specialist in surgery of the adult foot and ankle. He underwent medical school training at University College Hospital, London and orthopaedic surgical training in South Wales. Rhys is based at the Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre in University Llandough Hospital, Cardiff and the University Hospital of Wales. His private patients are seen at Vale Healthcare’s Foot and Ankle Clinic at the Cardiff Bay Clinic.
Following his medical training, Mr Thomas undertook a 12 month fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the prestigious University of Toronto in Canada. This further training and development in the field has meant that Mr Thomas is the only surgeon in the UK to have been awarded fellowships by both the European and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies. Rhys has been a Consultant since 2001 and his work deals exclusively with disorders of the foot and ankle. Due to his extensive experience in his specialist field, Rhys is regularly invited as a keynote speaker and presenter at conferences around the world.
Rhys regularly treats professional sports people and elite athletes with foot and ankle problems. He sees patients from a wide variety of disciplines, including Olympic athletes. He acts as honorary surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union, Cardiff Blues, Cardiff City and Glamorgan Cricket, and also regularly treats rugby players from the other Welsh regions and the English Guinness Premiership. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK and has set up the South Wales sports medicine forum. He is an Executive member of the Foot in Diabetes UK committee.
By working in a teaching hospital and as an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University Mr Thomas has a strong commitment to training the doctors and surgeons of the future.
Mr Thomas’s private clinic is based at the Foot and Ankle Clinic private clinic at the in Vale Healthcare’s Cardiff Bay Clinic. This new clinic has full access to diagnostic tests (X-ray, screening, ultrasound, and MRI), podiatry services, physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathic therapy, all on one site.
Patients are regularly seen, diagnosed (using diagnostic imaging facilities) and treated during the same visit, providing a rapid access one-stop clinic, including immediate access to non-operative therapies..
In June 2010 Rhys will begin practising at Vale Healthcare’s brand new Vale Hospital, a state of the art private hospital near Cardiff, opening in Hensol, the Vale of Glamorgan. This will offer patient choice for independent healthcare in South Wales, and provide state of the art facilities in the beautiful grounds of Hensol Castle estate.
