Leo Jacobs: Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Shoulder, Elbow and Hand Specialist, Oldham and Rochdale

Specialist in shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist surgery, especially shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder replacement, being one of only two surgeons in the North West currently performing reverse shoulder replacement, appropriate when arthritis is caused by chronic rotator cuff rupture.

Mr Leo Jacobs qualified MBChB in 1975 from University of Cape Town, South Africa and spent the next 5½ working in Namibia where he developed his interest in Orthopaedic Surgery.  This period included a 2 year military service.  Mr Jacobs then moved to the UK in 1981 and started his training as an Orthopaedic Surgeon.  He achieved the FRCS in 1986.  Mr Jacobs then obtained his FRCSED Orth in 1993 and was eligible for entry on to the GMC Specialist register.  His CCST date was 1st January 1994.

Mr Jacobs was appointed a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (with interest in Upper Limb Surgery) at Royal Oldham Hospital on 1st January 1994.  He then set about the development of an Upper Limb service in Oldham and introduced Shoulder Arthroscopy and Shoulder Joint Replacements, which were new to Oldham.  Mr Jacobs sub-specialised entirely in 1998 so that from then on he only undertook surgery for Upper Limb problems (80% Shoulder conditions) in the NHS and the private sector.

Clinical interests

Shoulder surgery

Mr Jacobs is one of only two surgeons in the north west of England to undertake inverse/reverse shoulder replacements. The normal shoulder replacement replaces the anatomy of the shoulder with a plastic socket for the glenoid and a metal ball that is attached to a pin that is inserted down the shaft of the humerus. In certain situations where the arthritis is caused by a chronic rotator cuff rupture and the patient has an apparent paralysis of the arm because of the absent rotator cuff a normal shoulder replacement is unable to cope in this situation. With a newer shoulder replacement design, called an inverse/reverse shoulder replacement, a metal ball is attached to the glenoid and a plastic socket is inserted in the pin that goes down the shaft of the humerus. This procedure is now becoming standard in Mr Jacobs's practice for this type of specialised shoulder arthritis situation that is secondary to a chronic rupture of the rotator cuff.
