Specialist in hip and knee problems including arthritis, degenerative joint disorders, soft tissue knee injuries, knee arthroscopy and partial knee replacement
David Murray MA, MD, FRCS is a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Oxford, and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust, Oxford. He specialises in hip and knee surgery, and has an international reputation for clinical, research and development work in this field: Professor Murray leads a team of clinical scientists who undertake biomechanical and clinical studies related to the knee and hip. The team is the most productive in their field in the UK and one of the most influential in the world.
Professor Murray initially studied engineering at the University of Cambridge (where he was awarded the Wright Prize for Engineering), but subsequently changed to medicine and trained at the universities of Cambridge, London and Oxford. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has a doctorate from the University of Cambridge.
Professor Murray, in collaboration with his research team, his clinical colleagues and the orthopaedic industry has developed the Oxford Partial Knee. This device has a mobile bearing, is implanted using a minimally invasive approach and is the most widely used partial knee replacement. The success of this development has led to a worldwide increase in the use of partial knees, mobile bearings and minimally invasive approaches. Professor Murray and his group have made major contributions in the field of hip resurfacing, total hip and total knee replacement and revision surgery. The group is also carrying out pioneering work in the treatment of pain and early arthritis in the hip and knee as well as soft tissue injury.
