A hip and knee specialist with particular interest in hip and knee replacement in the younger patient and hip arthroscopy, including the arthroscopic treatment of hip impingement.
Mr Andy Langdown, BSc MB ChB FRCS (Tr & Orth), is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon practising in Portsmouth. He qualified from Birmingham in 1993, obtained the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1997 and was accredited to the Specialist Register in 2005 having trained in Bristol, Oxford and Australia. His specialist area of interest is surgery of the hip and knee, including primary and revision joint replacement, ligament reconstruction and arthroscopic surgery. He has particular interests in hip and knee replacement in the younger patient and hip arthroscopy, including the arthroscopic treatment of hip impingement.
Andy Langdown is also an accomplished trauma surgeon, having spent time as a consultant on the specialist regional trauma service in Oxford. He has a specific interest in complex fractures around the knee.
In addition to a busy clinical practice Andy Langdown maintains an active interest in medical education, training and research. He is a member of faculty for both the Oxford and Wessex Orthopaedic Specialist Examination Revision Courses and is co-convener and author of the Orthopaedic and Trauma modules of The Royal College of Surgeons of England Surgical Trainees Educational Programme (STEP). He has presented at many national and international meetings and has published articles in many of the leading orthopaedic journals. He is a keen sportsman who regularly competes nationally in endurance events.
As patients’ functional demands following joint replacement have increased, technology has advanced to cater for this need. Andy Langdown is a strong advocate of tailoring treatment to patient demand and uses many modern techniques in his daily clinical practice. Such techniques include the use of:
