About Mr Ajeya Adhikari 

Mr Adhikari is a specialist knee surgeon and is in the top decile nationally in numbers treated. He deals with surgical as well as non surgical disorders of the knee. He has pioneered the use of computers and robotics in orthopaedic surgery in the UK and is actively involved in the culture of cartilage cells and transplant for cartilage injuries. He is able to provide full range of customisation to his joint replacements. Over the last few years his focus has been on managing post operative pain and blood loss. This is an area which affects patients the most and he has had great success using new technology and instruments

He has a keen interest and attends to sport injuries in the Wimbledon and Chelsea areas of South-West London. He currently provides orthopaedic services to Crystal Palace Football Club.

Mr Adhikari completed his MBBS training at Delhi University in 1984, obtaining a gold medal in the final examination. He then undertook postgraduate training in orthopaedics at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. He obtained his masters degree in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1990 through thesis and examination.

In the UK he trained in the North East Thames Registrar Rotation in Orthopaedic Surgery from 1992. He undertook a knee fellowship with Mr Jamie Flanagan at the Orthopaedic Centre, Black Notley Hospital. He obtained his Masters Degree in Orthopaedics through dissertation and examination from the University of Liverpool in 1996 and then passed the FRCS (Orth) examination in 1999. Since then he has trained in various aspects of orthopaedic surgery in Austria, Switzerland, the USA and Germany.

Mr Adhikari currently works as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with the Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust. He is one of the founding surgeons at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, which is the largest joint replacement centre in the UK. Prior to that he worked in the same capacity for four years at King's College Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham in London.

He runs a fellowship and mentoring programme which trains orthopaedic surgeons from as far away as Australia. He is actively involved in the software and hardware development of computer navigated systems used for orthopaedic surgery.

Orthopaedic expertise and private treatment offered

Mr Adhikari treats all lower limb problems and performs more than 600 operations a year. In the last few years his referrals have increasingly been patients with knee problems as more and more general practitioners and patients have become aware of his special interest in the field. He provides both operative and non-operative treatment of lower limb conditions. He also provides second opinions for difficult knee problems.

Special clinical interests  

Knee surgeryOver the last three years Mr Adhikari has incorporated modern medicines and techniques to reduce blood loss and pain management during joint replacements. There has been a 90% reduction in blood transfusion and significant reduction in pain allowing patients to walk early. Mr Adhikari's team have expertise in undertaking surgical procedures in high risk patients with chronic medical conditions and debility.


Sports injuriesHe also has a special interest in sports injuries to the lower limb. He provides orthopaedic services to Crystal Palace and other smaller football teams in South London. He has an interest in skiing, rugby, athletics and other contact sports injuries.

Research interests

Computer and robotic orthopaedic surgery

Mr Adhikari carried out the first computer and robotic assisted joint replacement in the UK in October 2002as reported by the BBCHe continues to present his research papers all around the world including the United States, Europe and the Far East.

Cartilage transplant

He has been involved in the transplant of cartilage cells into the knee since 2000. He is currently one of the investigators in a pan European trial (Summit trial): 'A comparison between the performance of chondrocytes versus microfracture technique on knee symptoms'.


Management of blood loss during TKR

He has just completed a study using a new device to reduce blood loss during total knee replacements.
