Ask an expert

Want to know more about prostate cancer or breast cancer?

Dr Nick Plowman, Clinical Oncologist at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London answers some common questions about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of prostate cancer and breast cancer.

Clinical interests

An expert on both radiation therapy and chemotherapy, Dr Plowman is dedicated to exploring the best methods of non-surgical therapies for the treatment of cancer and is at the forefront of new techniques in radiotherapy and medical oncology.

In medical oncology, his main contribution has been the demonstration of the importance of adrenal sex steroid production in both breast and prostate cancer and he pioneered therapies aimed at interrupting these pathways in both diseases.  These are now the standard treatments worldwide.

Dr Plowman has a long term interest in the advances of external beam conformal radiotherapy and seed implantation brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer and in hormonal methods of therapy.  He is experienced in the use of the latest stereotactic radiotherapy techniques that deliver targeted radiation, such as the Gamma Knife and CyberKnife systems.

Research interests

Dr Plowman's research interests lie in reducing the toxicity of cancer drugs and minimising the side effects associated with radiotherapy.  His current research involves the study of DNA repair genes with regard to predicting unusual toxicity from standard therapies in individual patients.  It is hoped that the therapeutic interruption of these pathways may lead to improved cancer treatment.

Key publications

Having published over 300 original, peer-reviewed research papers on radiotherapy and clinical oncology, Dr Plowman is a respected contributor to the academic literature.  He is the author of:
