Weight loss procedures offered by Mr Zak Rahman

Mr Rahman performs all weight loss procedures using laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, a technique that minimises scarring and results in a quicker recovery time for the patient.  He offers a range of treatments, including:

Gastric banding

Gastric banding is a commonly performed, reversible operation to restrict the amount of food that the stomach can hold.  Under general anaesthetic and using four or five tiny incisions, a special band is placed around the top part of the stomach, creating a small pouch.  The adjustable band can then be inflated or deflated by means of a special port just under the skin, regulating the amount of food that can be eaten at any one time.

Suitable for people with a BMI over 30 who also have medical problems associated with obesity, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, gastric banding, on average, results in a weight loss of around half of a person's excess body weight

Sleeve gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is also a procedure to reduce the size of the stomach, however unlike gastric banding, it is not reversible.  Suitable for patients with a BMI of 35 or over, up to 75% of the stomach is removed surgically, creating a smaller sleeve-shaped stomach.  As well as not being able to eat as much food as they could pre-surgery, patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy often report a reduction in appetite, it is thought as a result of the removal of the area of the stomach that plays a role in the amount of hunger hormone that is secreted.  Although sleeve gastrectomy reduces the size of the stomach, it does not affect the way that food is absorbed, meaning that patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy have fewer dietary restrictions compared to those who choose to have a gastric bypass.

Gastric bypass surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is the gold standard for long-term weight loss in morbidly obese people (BMI over 40).  It is also appropriate for those with BMIs over 35 who have a serious weight-related health problem.  The procedure works by restricting the amount of food that the stomach can hold and by bypassing part of the digestive system so that fewer calories are absorbed.

Most commonly performed as the Roux-en-Y procedure, gastric bypass surgery is irreversible and lifelong changes to diet are necessary.  However, gastric bypass surgery is generally a very successful operation, resulting in the loss of approximately two-thirds of a person's excess body weight, on average.  Gastric bypass also seems to have a dramatic reversing effect on diabetes, in many cases forcing it into an instant and lasting remission.
