Obesity surgery in London and Surrey
Obesity procedures work in one of two ways, either by restricting the amount of food that the stomach can hold, giving a feeling of fullness after a small meal, or by restricting the amount of food that the stomach holds and reducing the amount of calories absorbed by the digestive system.
Gastric balloon and gastric banding are reversible weight loss procedures that work by reducing the capacity of the stomach, resulting in, on average, a weight loss of 50% of a patient's excess weight. Sleeve gastrectomy is a permanent surgical reduction of the stomach giving an average excess weight loss of 60-70%.
Patients who are severely overweight may benefit from gastric bypass, an irreversible surgical procedure to reduce the size of the stomach and bypass a section of the small intestine, making fewer calories available for the body to use. Although highly effective for weight loss, gastric bypass is a major operation and a sleeve gastrectomy may be performed initially to bring the patient's weight down to a safe enough level for the procedure to be carried out. A commitment on the part of the patient to the dietary changes needed following bypass surgery is also essential.
