An expert in laparoscopic weight loss surgery

Mr Wong is a skilled laparoscopic surgeon with over 10 years experience working with pioneering techniques for the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions and obesity.  He continues to work at the forefront of laparoscopic surgery, offering his patients the least invasive procedures possible.

Weight loss surgery in Bristol and Cardiff

Mr Wong offers the following surgical procedures for the treatment of obesity:

  • Gastric band
  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Gastric bypass
  • Gastric balloon

Single incision laparoscopic gastric band surgery (SILS)

Gastric banding is a reversible procedure that restricts the capacity of the stomach, reducing the amount of food a person can eat.  Suitable for people with a BMI over 40, or for people with a BMI between 30 and 40 with a serious medical condition, on average it results in a loss of around half of a person's excess body weight.  As well as the obvious benefits to lifestyle and self-esteem, gastric banding can considerably improve, and in some cases, completely cure, obesity-related conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Mr Wong offers gastric banding performed using the latest cutting edge technique, single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS).  This advanced laparoscopic procedure allows a gastric band to be fitted through a single small cut, rather than the 5 or 6 cuts used in conventional keyhole surgery, resulting in minimal scarring and a quick recovery.

Gastric bypass surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is an effective method of weight loss for people who are morbidly obese (BMI over 40) and have failed to lose weight using non-surgical means such as healthy eating, exercise and medication.  The aim of the operation is to reduce the amount of calories that are absorbed from a meal and restrict the capacity of the stomach by surgically shortening the length of the small intestine and making the stomach smaller.

A technically demanding procedure that should always be performed by an experienced surgeon, such as Mr Wong, gastric bypass surgery results on average in the loss of between two-thirds and three quarters of excess body weight.  Although the surgery is not reversible and is associated with major changes to diet and lifestyle, the positive effects on health, mobility and self-confidence can be considerable.
