Surgical treatment of sciatica in Bristol

Sciatica is a pain that radiates out from the lower back but is mainly felt in the buttocks and leg, on one or both sides.  The condition is caused when there is irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, usually as a result of a herniated lumbar disc, although less common causes include degenerative narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis), infection or tumour.

Most cases of sciatica respond to conservative treatments such as painkillers, physiotherapy, relaxation techniques and corticosteroid injections, however in cases that fail to respond to these interventions and where the ability to carry out everyday activities is adversely affected, surgical removal of the fragment of herniated disc (lumbar microdiscectomy) may be recommended.

Mr Patel offers lumbar microdiscectomy as a routine and minimally invasive procedure lasting approximately one hour and involving a 2cm incision in the lower back.  Most patients are able to return home within 12 to 24 hours of the operation, and the majority return to normal non-strenuous activities within 2-3 weeks.  Success rates for the procedure are in the region of 90%, and Mr Patel is happy to discuss a patient's suitability for surgery and any complications associated with the technique at consultation.
