Vel Sakthivel is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon offering a bespoke service in Southampton and Poole for sports injuries in children and young adults, knee surgery and treatments such as: diagnostic arthroscopy, meniscal injury, osteochondral injury, anterior cruciate ligament, trochleoplasty, fractures and soft tissue injury.
Mr Vel Sakthivel is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with experience in musculoskeletal trauma, children's orthopaedics, sports injuries and knee surgery. He works in a busy university hospital, which is a major level I trauma centre. It is also a regional referral centre for paediatric orthopaedics. Vel is the Regional Surgical Advisor for the Wessex Region appointed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

An orthopaedic specialist in children's sports injuries and knee problems
Vel specialise in children’s orthopaedics such as cerebral palsy, hip dysplasia, foot and ankle problems as well as adult and children’s knee problems and injuries in and around the Southampton and Poole area.
Within the paediatrics field, he is very passionate about diagnosing problems early on using techniques such as ultrasound. His paediatric anterior crucial ligament (ACL) reconstruction and knee cap (patella) dislocation work uses techniques that do not damage your child’s knee growth plate.
He also treats adult knee pain and knee problems with a particular interest in sports knee injuries such as dislocated knee cap (patella), meniscus tears (torn cartilage) and chondromalacia (runner’s knee). He offers pioneering surgical techniques such as trochleoplasty to prevent repeated patellar (knee) dislocations.
Research interests
Vel has published a number of papers for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology. He is currently writing a Current Concepts Review on ‘The Feet in Children and Adolescents’.
