  • Spire Hospital Manchester
  • BMI The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle

A highly experienced knee surgeon in Manchester

Trained in London, Manchester and the USA, Professor Jari has extensive experience in the treatment of arthritic and traumatic knee conditions, including those resulting from sports injuries.  He works with many professional and elite sportspeople and teams, and is Team Surgeon to the British Olympic Wrestling Team.

An expert in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and cartilage transplantation, Professor Jari works with cutting edge technologies and techniques to provide the quickest possible recovery from surgery and return to sporting activity.  He is also skilled in minimally invasive partial and total knee replacement and computer-guided techniques to ensure optimal alignment of the knee prosthesis.

Knee conditions treated by Professor Jari

Professor Jari offers surgical and non-surgical treatment for all conditions affecting the knee joint, including:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture
  • Anterior knee pain
  • Cartilage damage
  • Osteochondritis dessicans (OCD)
  • Arthritis
  • Patellar instability
  • Patellar tendonitis and tendonopathy
  • Prepatellar bursitis (housemaid's knee)

Contralateral ACL reconstruction

Professor Jari offers contralateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, a technique developed in the United States that can significantly decrease the amount of time spent in rehabilitation.  Traditional ACL reconstruction techniques involve harvesting a tendon from the knee that is to be repaired, weakening the knee at a time when the main aim of rehabilitation is to reduce swelling and regain motion.  Attempts to strengthen the knee at this time can lead to swelling and slow down rehabilitation.  By harvesting a patellar tendon graft from the unaffected knee, the rehabilitation goals are split and can be achieved simultaneously rather than sequentially.  In practice this can mean a return to sport in as little time as 4 months, compared with the usual 9-12 months associated with conventional ACL reconstruction.

Minimally invasive knee replacement surgery in Manchester

In some cases, Professor Jari is able to perform partial and total knee replacement surgery through smaller incisions than traditional surgery, reducing soft tissue trauma, bleeding and postoperative pain.  Patients undergoing this minimally or less invasive surgery are then put on an accelerated rehabilitation programme that starts on the day of surgery.  Computer-aided navigation technology ensures that the prosthesis is placed as accurately as possible, giving it the best chance of long-term success.
