Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement
Surgery to replace a damaged, diseased or worn knee with
an artificial joint (arthroplasty) is now a routine operation,
providing thousands of people with increased mobility and relief from
pain. Often the damage to the joint is so extensive that both sides of
the knee need replacing (total knee replacement), however patients with
damage to only one area of the knee may be suitable for unicompartmental
or partial knee replacement (PKR).
Compared to a total knee replacement, PKR is a less
invasive, bone-sparing procedure involving a shorter hospital stay and a
more rapid recovery from surgery. The small implant does not disturb
the healthy tissues of the knee or any healthy bone, often resulting in
more natural movement in the knee than that achieved with total
replacement. Something to consider with PKR however, is that it does
not always ease pain as well as a total knee replacement and will
probably need replacing sooner. Highly experienced in both types of
knee replacement surgery, Miss Tross is able to offer expert advice on
which would be the most suitable procedure in each individual case.
