Knee replacement surgery in Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire

The surfaces of the bones in the knee joint are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth, tough material that prevents friction, allowing the bones to move easily over one another.  When the articular cartilage of the knee becomes worn or damaged, most commonly as a result of general wear and tear or injury, the bone surfaces of the joint are free to rub against each other causing the pain, stiffness and swelling associated with osteoarthritis.

Knee replacement surgery is a routine and effective treatment for knee arthritis that is causing significant pain and interfering with the ability to carry out everyday activities.  Depending on a patient's age, general health, level of activity and amount of damage to the knee joint, Mr Phaltankar offers both total knee replacement surgery and the less invasive partial knee replacement technique .  He is also experienced in revision surgery to replace an existing knee prosthesis that is worn or loose.

Knee cartilage transplantation

As the articular cartilage of the knee does not have the capacity to repair itself, any injury to it can result in persistent swelling and pain, and, in younger patients, to the early onset of osteoarthritis.  Traditionally, a procedure called microfracture has been used to stimulate the formation of cartilage in the defect, however although this technique can be effective in relieving pain, the cartilage produced is fibrocartilage rather than the stronger original hyaline cartilage and is more prone to wear away over time.

Mr Phaltankar offers autologous chondrocyte transplantation, a cutting edge new technique to repair articular knee cartilage.  In a two-stage process, a sample of healthy cartilage cells is removed from the knee arthroscopically and cultured on a membrane in the laboratory.  The membrane is then used to cover the cartilage defect in a second arthroscopic operation.  Whilst showing early signs of success, knee cartilage transplantation is still in the research phase of development and treatment is usually carried out as part of a clinical trial.
