An expert in partial knee replacement surgery

Osteoarthritis of the knee is the process whereby the protective cartilage that covers the bone surfaces of the knee joint is worn down over time or damaged as a result of traumatic injury.  The loss of cartilage allows the ends of the bones to rub together, causing inflammation, pain and eventual deformity.  As we lead more and more active lives, carrying sporting activity on well into middle age and beyond, arthritis, once a condition of the elderly, is being increasingly seen in younger patients.

Total knee replacement (TKR), to replace the whole joint with an artificial implant, is not always an ideal solution for a younger patient as the implant eventually wears out and needs more complex surgery to replace it within 15-20 years, or sooner if the patient is very active. Partial knee replacement (PKR) is a good intermediate solution for younger patients where their arthritis is confined to just one area of the knee joint. Partial knee replacement (PKR) is a less invasive procedure involving a smaller incision and less bone removal, restoring function and a natural range of movement to the knee.  Revision surgery to replace the implant or change to a TKR in the future is also more straightforward than revision of a previous total knee replacement.

An early adopter of PKR technology and techniques, Mr Evans is highly skilled in the procedure and experienced in carefully selecting the patients who would benefit most from the operation.
