James Bliss
Consultant Knee Surgeon, London: James Bliss

A highly experienced London-based knee surgeon specialising in reconstruction of the knee ligaments, including the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), knee replacement surgery and osteotomy techniques as an alternative to knee replacement.

Mr James Bliss is Consultant Knee Surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London.  He is able to offer private knee surgery at three leading independent hospitals in London: London Bridge Hospital, Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth and Princess Grace Hospital.

A leading knee surgeon in London

Awarded the gold medal by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in the final part of the FRCS Orthopaedics and Trauma examination in 2000, and having subsequently undergone sub-specialist training in knee surgery at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Mr James Bliss is a highly regarded knee surgeon with a special expertise in ligament surgery, knee replacement procedures and the latest osteotomy techniques to treat localised arthritic damage to the knee.  He is an intercollegiate trainer for part III of the FRCS examination and organises national and international courses on ACL reconstruction, knee replacement surgery and knee osteotomy.  Mr Bliss regularly advises the press and media on orthopaedic matters and was featured in the BBC's City Hospital programme.

  • Knee pain and swelling
  • Bowed legs (genu varum)
  • Knock knees (genu valgum)

An expert in knee ligament surgery

Damage to the ligaments of the knee is very common, with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) being among the injuries most often sustained by sportspeople.  Mr Bliss's busy inner-London NHS work and private practice have provided him with experience of the full range of ligament injuries, both acute and chronic, and he currently performs over 100 ACL and multi-ligament reconstructions each year.  He uses both the autograft (a new ligament harvested from the patient's own body) and allograft (a new ligament harvested from a donor) techniques, and is actively involved in the development of collagen grafts for ligament reconstruction.

Knee alignment surgery: an alternative to knee replacement

Mr Bliss is skilled in knee alignment surgery (knee osteotomy), a specialist technique for people who have arthritic damage to just one side of the knee, most commonly seen in those who are slightly 'bow-legged' or 'knock-kneed'.  Using state-of-the-art titanium plates, computer software and bone grafting techniques, he cuts and re-aligns the bone to redistribute the weight going through the knee.  An excellent alternative to knee replacement surgery, particularly in younger patients, the technique can also be used to correct severe knee deformities in children.
