An expert in knee ligament surgery
Damage to the ligaments of the knee is very common, with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) being among the injuries most often sustained by sportspeople. Mr Bliss's busy inner-London NHS work and private practice have provided him with experience of the full range of ligament injuries, both acute and chronic, and he currently performs over 100 ACL and multi-ligament reconstructions each year. He uses both the autograft (a new ligament harvested from the patient's own body) and allograft (a new ligament harvested from a donor) techniques, and is actively involved in the development of collagen grafts for ligament reconstruction.
Knee alignment surgery: an alternative to knee replacement
Mr Bliss is skilled in knee alignment surgery (knee osteotomy), a specialist technique for people who have arthritic damage to just one side of the knee, most commonly seen in those who are slightly 'bow-legged' or 'knock-kneed'. Using state-of-the-art titanium plates, computer software and bone grafting techniques, he cuts and re-aligns the bone to redistribute the weight going through the knee. An excellent alternative to knee replacement surgery, particularly in younger patients, the technique can also be used to correct severe knee deformities in children.
Mr James Bliss is an accredited consultant for the UK's leading private healthcare providers and private hospitals, including HCA Hospitals
