Knee replacement surgery in the younger patient
Total knee replacement surgery is now a routine
operation bringing relief from pain and restoring mobility in
approximately 60,000 people in the UK each year. The procedure involves
replacing the worn, damaged or diseased knee joint with an artificial
one, most commonly made up of two metal components with a plastic liner
inbetween. The plastic liner wears out over a period of time,
typically around 15 to 20 years depending on activity level, making it a
suitable option for an older patient, but less suitable for someone who
is under 60 and very active.
Mr Langdown is highly experienced in fitting the latest
hardwearing implants, such as the Genesis II knee replacement which has a
femoral component made of Oxinium, an extremely durable alloy of
zirconium with a ceramic surface that can withstand the forces generated
by the repeated sliding and rotating motions of the knee joint. Shown
in laboratory studies to reduce wear on the plastic liner by 90%,
Oxinium knee replacements and technologies like it may be a good
solution for a younger patient with an arthritic knee, and Mr Langdown
is able to offer his expert opinion in each individual case.
Custom-fit knee replacement in Portsmouth
Mr Langdown is skilled in the latest technology that
uses pre-operative computer modelling of x-rays and an MRI image of a
patient's knee joint to determine the correct implant size and placement
for each individual patient. The technique is associated with faster
recovery times compared to standard total knee replacement, and the more
accurate, personalised placement of the implant may also reduce the
risk of complications developing and improve the longevity of the
