Mr Shetty is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a particular clinical interest in revision knee surgery. He has been trained in computer assisted navigation surgery and uses it routinely for primary and revision knee replacement surgery.
Mr Shetty increasingly uses computer navigation to perform uni-compartmental knee, patello-femoral arthroplasty (knee replacement), and is collaborating with Imperial College on research into navigated patello-femoral arthroplasty. His experience with navigation has allowed him to develop further his training in minimal access surgery. Besides knee replacement, he has acquired considerable skill in advanced arthroscopic knee surgery which is his main surgery work. He performs arthroscopic assisted Anterior Cruciate Ligamamt (ACL) reconstruction as day surgery.
During his fellowship at King’s College Hospital, he was trained in the management of complex trauma and limb reconstruction. He uses the Llizarov technique, Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF), monolateral fixator and AO technique in the management of non-union, malunion and deformity correction.
As a 1st year consultant, his surgical and teaching skills have attracted 5th and 6th year trainees from the circuit to work under him.
Clinical interests
Mr Shetty’s main interest is computer navigation surgery (CAOS) and robotics, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in joint arthroplasty & arthroscopic surgery. He is continuing his interest in knee surgery, especially revision arthroplasty and treatment of patello femoral disorders in Kings’ College Hospital, which is a tertiary referral centre. He is also involved in developing surgical techniques in ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation)/ MACI.
He is involved with developing the application of computer and robotics in orthopaedic surgery. He performed the first robotic assisted arthroscopic surgery at King’s College Hospital. This is the first of its kind in the World.
He has a special interest in teaching applied anatomy and has a senior lecturer post at Kings’ College London (Kings’, Guys’ and St. Thomas’s School of Medicine) where he teaches undergraduate students and hopes to get the position of Reader in the near future.
Research interests
Mr Shetty is currently continuing his research with Prof. A. Amis at Imperial College London, studying biomechanics of the patello-femoral joint. He is working with Mr Justin Sharpe, Senior Scientist at the Blond McIndoe Centre (East Grinstead), studying autologous chondrocyte implantation.
He has strong research links with both Imperial College London and East Grinstead with Research Fellows. Besides postgraduates he has an MD student working with him at Imperial College. At present he is taking part in a multi-centre international study on navigation and uses the result to deliver Hunterian professorial lecture at Royal College of Surgeons of England.
