A highly experienced and pioneering knee surgeon in South West London

Trained in India and London, Mr Adhikari worked at King's College Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham before moving to St Helier Hospital in Carshalton to assist in the creation of the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC), a Centre of Clinical Excellence for joint replacement and the largest joint replacement facility in the UK.  In terms of number of patients treated, he is in the top 10% of knee surgeons nationally, carrying out on average 250 knee replacements, 200 knee arthroscopies and 60 anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions per year.

An innovative and pioneering surgeon, Mr Adhikari is actively involved in the development of cutting edge treatments for knee problems.  Regarded as a leading authority on computer-guided joint replacement, he carried out the first procedure of its kind in the UK in 2002, and has implemented a training programme for UK and international surgeons at SWLEOC.  He has also been involved in the development of the latest cartilage transplantation technique to treat cartilage damage since 2000, and is one of the investigators in the current European Summit trial.

Computer-guided knee replacement in London

Knee replacement surgery is now a routine treatment for arthritic or damaged knee joints, reducing pain and improving quality of life for thousands of people in the UK every year.  The latest computer-guided technique pioneered by Mr Adhikari, allows him to customise the knee implant to the specific anatomy of the patient, resulting in a fit that is as close to that of a natural joint as possible.  Because of their exact fit, customised knee replacements are expected to last longer than standard ones, and the pre-surgery planning involved in the technique lessens surgery times and reduces the chances of complications.
