Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery
The most common reason for a hip replacement is osteoarthritis, a
degenerative condition associated with the wear and tear of ageing that
causes the cartilage covering the joint surfaces to wear out, allowing
the bone surfaces to rub together. Osteoarthritis can also develop as a
result of an injury to the hip or a congenital abnormality, and is
typically felt as a pain in the groin, thigh, buttock or knee. The
joint may also be stiff and less mobile.
Hip replacement surgery is now a routine orthopaedic
procedure, relieving pain and improving mobility for thousands of people
in the UK every year. The surgery involves replacing the head of the
femur (the ball part of the joint) with a stemmed prosthesis that is
fixed into the femur (total hip replacement) or sits on its surface (hip
resurfacing). The socket part of the joint is also replaced with
polythene or ceramic cup-shaped prosthesis. Hip prostheses come in a variety of designs and materials, and which one is used is dependent on the age and bone health of the patient.
Miss Tross is an expert in minimally invasive hip
replacement surgery, a technique to insert hip prostheses through an
incision less than 10cm, as opposed to the 20 to 30cm long incision
used in conventional hip surgery. As well as producing a better
cosmetic result, minimally invasive hip surgery is associated with less disruption
to muscle and tissue, less blood loss and a faster recovery. The technique is not suitable for every patient, however, and Miss Tross is able to advise on the best course of treatment for each individual at consultation.
