Specialist in orthopaedic, hip, knee, ankle and foot surgery including ankle arthritis and ankle replacement surgery.
Mr Robert Smith MB ChB, FRCS Eng (Tr & Orth) is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Cheshire Hospital and Wrightington Hospital, Lancashire. His surgical practice specialises in lower limb surgery, principally treating foot and ankle conditions with a particular focus on ankle arthritis and ankle replacement surgery. Mr Smith also treats knee and hip arthritis and performs arthroscopic knee and ankle surgery.
Mr Smith qualified from Manchester Medical School in 1994 and undertook junior doctor posts in the Greater Manchester area. He subsequently acquired a training post in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in the North West where he completed his general orthopaedic training taking a particular interest in surgery to the lower limb.
In the latter part of his training time he worked in various fellowship posts focusing on lower limb joint replacement, and foot and ankle surgery. Through one of these fellowships, which involved working with Mr Wod at
Wrightington Hospital, Mr Smith developed a particular interest in ankle replacement and ankle and hindfoot arthritis.
In July 2006 Mr Smith was appointed as a locum consultant lower limb surgeon at Wrightington Hospital and subsequently a substantive consultant in trauma and orthopaedics at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust.
Clinical interests
Mr Smith performs planned and trauma surgery to the lower limb. His hip replacement practice primarily deals with cemented or cementless replacement but does not perform hip resurfacing. Mr Smith’s principal interest is in surgery to the knee, ankle and foot and is interested in arthroplasty (joint replacement), performing primary cemented or cementless total knee replacement, unicompartment knee replacement and patellofemoral knee replacement. He enjoys sports injury surgery such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and arthroscopic treatment of simple cartilage tears.
Mr Smith has an interest in hindfoot and ankle surgery and treats ankle arthritis with ankle fusion or ankle replacement depending on individual patient circumstances. Mr Smith also treats ankle injuries with arthroscopy when suitable and reconstructs lateral ligament injuries of the ankle. Other common procedures include subtalar fusion and triple fusion (hindfoot fusion) for arthritis around the hindfoot.
