Treatment of adult hip dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a term used to describe a hip joint that is not correctly formed causing it to function incorrectly and wear out prematurely. Although babies are routinely checked at birth, hip dysplasia is not always easy to diagnose and adolescents and adults can go on to experience symptoms including hip pain, a limp and/or clicking and popping of the joint.
Mr Sherry offers expert assessment and diagnosis of hip pain in adolescents and young adults. Where dysplasia is diagnosed, his aim is to reduce pain and conserve as much of the hip as possible, using techniques such as periacetabular osteotomy which is a very successful surgery to change the orientation of the hip socket, and hip resurfacing which involves reshaping the head of the femur or corresponding socket and lining them with cup-like metal implants. He is also able to perform total hip replacement surgery in cases of extensive bone and cartilage damage.
