Minimally invasive total hip replacement in North Wales
Traditional total hip replacement surgery is performed through a large incision 20-25cm long. More recently there has been a move towards smaller incisions, including some less than 10cm long. Although associated with definite benefits in terms of less tissue damage, shorter operating times and quicker recovery, these newer techniques can be problematic in terms of providing adequate exposure of the area for the surgeon to perform the procedure effectively.
Mr Ganapathi offers a modified and refined minimally invasive technique, using special instruments to perform the majority of hip replacements through an incision approximately 7cm long. Exposure is not compromised in any way and the patient still experiences the benefits associated with less soft tissue dissection.
Expert diagnosis and treatment of hip problems in younger patients
Hip arthroscopy involves the insertion of a fibre-optic tube into the hip joint to diagnose and treat hip problems. Although now a common procedure for the knee, hip arthroscopy is a more specialised and still developing procedure that is helping to expand knowledge of the causes of hip and groin pain, particularly in young people.
Recently recognised hip problems in younger patients include hip impingement syndrome (also known as femoroacetabular impingement, FAI), labral tear, and abductor tear of the hip. As one of a few surgeons in Wales offering hip arthroscopy, Mr Ganapathi is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of these novel conditions.
