Arthroscopic treatment of hip impingement
Hip impingement has only been recognised relatively recently as a cause of arthritis in younger people. A mismatch between the ball of the hip joint and the socket that it fits into interferes with the smooth motion of the joint, resulting in the eventual breakdown of the cushioning cartilage. Painless in its early stages, the main symptoms are stiffness in the groin and a loss of full range of motion in the hip.
Once diagnosed, it is important that this condition is treated promptly to prevent any further damage to the cartilage and joint surfaces. Using a thin fibre optic camera probe (arthroscope) with tiny attached instruments, Mr Wilson reshapes the ball and socket, cuts away any damaged cartilage and treats worn areas to promote the growth of new cartilage.
