Mr Chris Rees is Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex.  He offers private hip replacement surgery at Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

An experienced hip replacement surgeon

Mr Rees graduated from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1994, going on to undertake basic surgical training in London before commencing specialist training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore, Middlesex, an internationally renowned centre of excellence.  He completed his training with a fellowship year based in Derby and at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, one of the UK's busiest trauma centres, before taking up his consultant post at Broomfield Hospital in 2006.

Although his private practice focuses predominantly on the treatment of knee disorders, Mr Rees is also skilled in hip replacement surgery, having received specialist training while working on the Joint Reconstruction Unit at the RNOH.  Carrying out between 60 and 80 total hip replacements a year, he is one of the main hip replacement surgeons at Broomfield Hospital.

Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery in Essex

Modern hip replacement surgery is now a routine and highly successful operation, bringing relief from pain and restoring mobility for thousands of men and women in the UK each year.  Often recommended when conservative treatments for arthritic hip pain are no longer effective and everyday tasks become increasingly difficult to perform, a total hip replacement should last between 10 and 15 years before it needs replacing.

Treating both the elderly and younger patients with hip arthritis, Mr Rees offers a comprehensive range of hip prostheses and surgical techniques, including femoral heads (ball part of the joint) made of cobalt chrome, ceramic or the highly durable alloy oxinium, and cemented, cementless and hybrid (usually cementless socket and cemented femoral stem) procedures.  He carries out the surgery through a single small incision between 10-12cm long and patients are encouraged to get out of bed and fully weight bear on the day following surgery.  All Mr Rees's patients are fully supported postoperatively by experienced physiotherapists and are usually able to go home within 3 to 6 days.  Ongoing support is provided in the form of outpatient physiotherapy and regular reviews by Mr Rees.
