Hip treatments available
Primary and revision hip replacement
Total hip replacement (arthroplasty) is usually undertaken when a hip joint has been worn down by osteoarthritis or damaged by disease or trauma. The arthritic parts of the joint are removed and replaced with an artificial hip joint (prosthesis). Hip replacement surgery is highly effective in reducing the pain and debilitating effects of worn or damaged hip joints. The replacement hip joint will usually last from 10 to 20 years. It is possible to do a second (revision) operation after this time, although this will invariably be a more complex procedure than the first.
Hip resurfacing
Hip resurfacing replaces the diseased or damaged surfaces in the hip joint with metal implants. Less bone is removed than in hip replacement surgery, making this a more suitable procedure for younger patients who may need a total hip replacement in later years.
Minimally invasive hip replacement
This technique allows the surgeon to perform a hip replacement through one or two small incisions, resulting in less muscle damage, reduced pain, a shorter hospital stay, quicker rehabilitation and a better cosmetic outcome. It is a highly skilled procedure, usually undertaken in conjunction with computer navigation.
Computer assisted hip surgery
In hip replacement surgery it is critical that the new hip joint is correctly positioned to avoid a later dislocation or premature wearing out. This is achieved using the latest imaging technology.
