Sanjay Agrawal: Hernia Surgeon, Essex and London
Hernia Surgeon, Essex and London: Sanjay Agrawal
An Essex-based laparoscopic surgeon offering expert surgical repair of all types of hernia, including inguinal, femoral, incisional and paraumbilical hernias.
Mr Sanjay Agrawal is Consultant Surgeon at Homerton University Hospital, London and Clinical Director of The London Obesity Clinic. He works with a number of private hospitals in Essex and London to offer high quality hernia repair surgery.
What is a hernia?
A hernia occurs when a weakness in the abdominal wall
allows the underlying structures, such as the intestines, blood vessels
or fat, to poke through. This results in a small soft lump that can
often be pushed back in. Although usually harmless, hernias do require
surgical repair as they never get better by themselves and there is the
potential for the protruding tissue to become trapped, cutting off the
blood supply and causing a medical emergency (strangulated hernia).
Hernia repair in Essex and London
Mr Agrawal offers surgical treatment of all types of hernia, including:
Inguinal hernia - the most common type of hernia, occurring in the groin, usually in men.
Femoral hernia - occurring lower down in the groin, often in women. Needs prompt repair as it carries a high risk of strangulation.
Incisional hernia - occurring in an existing scar or wound, usually within two years of a surgery
Paraumbilical hernia - appearing as a small lump above the belly button. Also carries a high risk of strangulation.
An expert in laparoscopic hernia repair
Laparoscopic or keyhole surgery is a minimally invasive surgical
technique that is increasingly used to treat hernias. The protruding
bowel or tissue is put back into place and the defect in the abdominal
wall repaired with mesh using special instruments which are inserted
through three small incisions, no larger than 1.5cm each. Patients who
have had a laparoscopic procedure experience less postoperative pain and
are able to return to work much more quickly than those who have had
open surgery. Scarring is also minimised.
With extensive training and experience in these
surgical techniques, Mr Agrawal is able to offer the expertise required
to perform successful laparoscopic hernia repair.
Open surgery for hernia repair
Where possible, Mr Agrawal aims to repair hernias
laparoscopically. However, the type of surgery used is dependent a
number of factors such as the type of hernia, the size of the hernia, if
there is any strangulation present and the general health of the
patient. In some cases, Mr Agrawal may suggest that an open procedure,
where the hernia is repaired through a single 6cm incision, is the best
course of treatment.
