Hernia repair in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire

Mr Whitelaw provides expert surgical repair of all types of abdominal hernia, including:

  • Inguinal hernia
  • Femoral hernia
  • Umbilical hernia
  • Epigastric hernia
  • Stomal hernia
  • Incisional hernia
  • Recurrent hernia

Expert laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair

Most often seen in men, inguinal hernias are the most common type of hernia.  They occur when part of the bowel pokes through a weakness in the lower abdomen, presenting as a small lump in the groin.  If left, there is a chance that the bowel and blood vessels may become trapped, causing the tissue to die, a serious condition known as a strangulated hernia.  For this reason, and because they will never get better without intervention, it is always advisable to have an inguinal hernia surgically repaired.

Mr Whitelaw is highly experienced in the latest laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques to repair inguinal hernias including totally extraperitoneal (TEP) hernia repair.   This procedure involves putting the bowel back into place and closing the defect in the abdominal wall with mesh through three small incisions without entering the peritoneal cavity, reducing complications such as perforations to the bowel.  Compared to open hernia surgery, laparoscopic hernia surgery results in less postoperative pain and quicker recovery times, however it is a skilled procedure as should always be carried out by an experienced specialist surgeon, such as Mr Whitelaw.

Open hernia repair surgery

Laparoscopic hernia repair is the treatment of choice for simple and less complex hernias, however in cases of large or recurrent hernias, or in patients with a great deal of abdominal scarring, an open repair carried out through a single large incision may be preferable.  Mr Whitelaw is able to offer his expert opinion on which technique would be most suitable in each individual case.
