An experienced hernia surgeon in Bristol and Cardiff

Mr Wong is a highly experienced general surgeon with a specialist interest in gastrointestinal and hernia surgery.  He is an enthusiastic proponent of keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery, skilled in the latest and most advanced techniques.

What is a hernia?

A hernia is a small, often painless, lump that results from the contents of the abdomen pushing through a defect in the abdominal wall.  Although they do not always seem to be too much of a problem, hernias should always be treated as they invariably enlarge over time and the contents, such as blood vessels or intestines, can become trapped, cutting off the blood supply and damaging the bowel (strangulated hernia).

Types of hernia treated by Mr Christopher Wong

Mr Wong offers treatment for all types of abdominal hernias, including:

  • Inguinal hernia
  • Femoral hernia
  • Paraumbilical hernia
  • Epigastric hernia
  • Incisional hernia
  • Sportsman's hernia (Gilmore's Groin)
  • Spigelian hernia

Expert laparoscopic hernia repair

In most cases, all hernias are treated using the same basic principle, that is, a mesh is placed over the defect to seal and reinforce the affected area.  Laparoscopic techniques now mean that inguinal, femoral, incisional and Spigelian hernias can be repaired through two or three small cuts of 1 to 2cms, rather than the 6-10cm incision used in traditional open surgery.  This results in less scarring and quicker recovery times for the patient.

Mr Wong is also now able to repair incisional hernias (those occurring in a previous surgical scar) through a single small incision (single incision laparoscopic surgery, SILS) using the latest mesh technology.

Open or keyhole surgery?

For most people, laparoscopic surgery is undoubtedly the best solution for hernia repair, having the advantages of a quicker return to everyday activities, less pain and a better cosmetic outcome.  In some more complicated cases an open approach may be advised and patients wishing to avoid general anaesthesia may also opt for an open approach as this can often be done under local anaesthetic, rather than general.

Patients seeking hernia surgery can be assured that Mr Wong is able to offer his expert advice on which procedure would be most beneficial in each individual case.
