Clinical interests
Mr Parsons is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in obstetrics and gynaecology in June 2003, from the North Thames Deanery. He developed his interest in urogynaecology as Senior House Officer at King’s College Hospital, and elected to undertake special interest training after achieving his CCST, under the expert guidance of Professor Cardozo at King’s College Hospital.
Mr Parsons has broad experience in gynaecology, having trained in a variety of major teaching hospitals. He now has three gynaecology clinics each week – two at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital, and one at The Priory Hospital. He sees a wide range of general clinical problems, including heavy or painful periods, and abdominal pain.
Mr Parsons has a particular interest in urogynaecology; he works as part of a multi-disciplinary team including specialist nurses, physiotherapists and other doctors to treat symptoms such as prolapse; urinary incontinence; overactive bladder symptoms; sexual dysfunction; bladder pain; and night-voiding or bedwetting. He offers a broad range of investigations including ‘quality of life’ assessment; electronic bladder diary; laboratory urodynamics; video urodynamics; ambulatory urodynamics; cystoscopy; and complimentary tests such as urethral pressure profiling and pad testing.
Mr Parsons provides a full range of conservative treatments, but is happy to offer surgical treatments if need be. Treatments available include nurse led clinics; inpatient bladder training; bladder instillations; pelvic floor surgery and repair; vaginal hysterectomy; and continence surgery (“TVT”, bladder neck injections, colposuspension).
Research interests
Mr Parsons has established his research interests on the voiding habits of normal women, and the use and performance of an electronic, computerised bladder diary. He was awarded a research fellowship and grant for $30,000 from Life-Tech Inc, Texas, USA.
Since his appointment as a consultant, Mr Parsons has written or co-authored six peer-reviewed papers (with a 7th in press), five review articles, two book chapters, and two multi-media educational modules for UK doctors.
