An experienced and pioneering colorectal surgeon in Birmingham
A graduate of Cardiff University School of Medicine, Mr Ismail completed his surgical training in Birmingham, Hong Kong and at the National Cancer Institute in Tokyo. He was awarded an MD with Distinction for the work he carried out during a prestigious Sheldon Research Fellowship.
Since his appointment to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 1995, Mr Ismail has played an instrumental role in the development of colorectal services in the West Midlands area, including advances in referral pathways, laparoscopic surgery and enhanced surgical recovery techniques. An innovative and pioneering surgeon, he was one of the first colorectal surgeons in the UK to perform single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for the treatment of bowel cancer and was instrumental in the introduction of cutting edge diagnostic technology such as virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography) and video capsule endoscopy (Pill-Cam) to the West Midlands.
The Birmingham Bowel Clinic
Mr Ismail is a founding member of the Birmingham Bowel Clinic, a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists, pathologists and radiologists providing expert diagnosis and management for all conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus. With access to the very latest diagnostic equipment and offering the most modern surgical, oncological and radiological techniques, The Birmingham Bowel Clinic delivers sensitive and integrated care for complaints that many find embarrassing and distressing.
The HALO procedure in the West Midlands
Mr Ismail specialises in Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation
Operation, also known as the HALO procedure, a minimally invasive and
virtually pain-free treatment for haemorrhoids. Using a small
ulltrasound probe under general anaesthetic, he identifies the vessels
supplying blood to a haemorrhoid and places a small stitch in each,
blocking the supply of blood and causing the haemorrhoid to shrink.
The HALO procedure is recognised by NICE to be a very
effective treatment for haemorrhoids, relieving symptoms such as
bleeding, swelling, pain and itching in around 90% of patients treated.
A highly skilled HALO surgeon, Mr Ismail has appeared on Channel 4's
popular Embarrassing Bodies series performing the procedure on a patient suffering from severe haemorrhoids.
