Ian Beckingham: Consultant Laparoscopic (Keyhole) and General Surgeon, Nottingham

Ian Beckingham is a full-time Consultant Surgeon at Queens Medical Centre and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Nottingham Medical School. He specialises in keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery and surgery of the liver and pancreas.  The treatments he offers include surgery for gallstone diseases, hiatus hernia and anti-reflux surgery, and gastric banding (obesity surgery). 

He trained at Nottingham University and qualified B Med Sci (Hons) BM BS in 1987.  He obtained FRCS in 1992, DM in Surgery in 1994, was awarded the Medawar Medal in 1995 and a Hunterian Professorship in 1996.  He completed his training in Newcastle, Leeds and Cape Town where he was awarded the JH Louw Memorial Medal for most outstanding trainee and the Solly Marks Medal for best research paper at SAGES.  In the UK he was awarded Travel Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons and Association of Upper GI Surgeons.  He was appointed to his current position as Consultant in 1999.

Since his appointment as a consultant, Ian has developed laparoscopic surgery both locally and nationally pioneering a number of procedures including laparoscopic liver and pancreatic resection in the UK.  His practical interests include laparoscopic gallbladder, bile duct and antireflux surgery.  He performed some of the first Single Incision (SILS) Cholecystectomies in the UK.  He has a vast experience of laparoscopic and open hernia surgery for inguinal, femoral, umbilical, epigastric and incisional hernias and has performed over 2500 laparoscopic TEP hernia repairs with minimal complications.  He has operated on a number of high profile sportsman with sports hernias/Gilmore’s groin.

His interests in benign Upper GI surgery include anti-reflux surgery, surgery for achalasia and splenectomy with over 95% of procedures carried out laparoscopically (keyhole) including hiatus hernias and giant paraoesophageal hernias. 

He has been performing obesity surgery at Royal Derby NHS trust and in Nottingham for 10 years with experience of over 300 laparoscopic gastric bands with <2% complication rate (well below the 5-7% national average).

He is Head of HPB Surgery at Queens Medical Centre and Chairman of the HPB Cancer unit (encompassing Nottingham, Newark, Mansfield, Lincoln and Derby).  He performs major cancer resections for liver, pancreatic and biliary cancer and undertakes complex endoscopic procedures including ERCP’s (bile duct interventions).

Research and publications in liver cancer, gallstones, and hernia surgery

Mr Beckingham's research interests include liver cancer, gallstones, and hernia surgery.  He has been co-recipient of Wellcome and Royal College research grants worth in excess of £250,000.  He has over 100 original scientific papers and publications and a number of books and book chapters including Editor of The ABC of Diseases of Liver, Pancreas and Gallbladder, and Chapters in Aird’s  Textbook of Surgery (Gallstones) , Blumgart’s Surgery of the Liver and Biliary tract and Recent Advances in Surgery (Hernia Surgery).  He is a well known speaker at national and international surgical meetings and training courses both at the MAESTrO Unit in Nottingham and at other centres in the UK, France and Germany.
