Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon specialising in complex colorectal surgery (cancer, inflammatory bowel and diverticular disease), with a particular interest in ultra-low sphincter saving surgery for rectal cancer and the management of complex pelvic floor disorders.
Mr Christopher Chan is lead surgeon for inflammatory bowel disease at Barts and The London NHS Trust. He has specialist expertise in colorectal diseases, including colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, enterocutaneous fistula, complex anal fistula, anorectal and pelvic floor problems (incontinence, evacuatory difficulty, constipation) and pelvic floor reconstruction.
Mr Chan's colorectal training and qualifications
Christopher Chan graduated from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital, London and carried out the surgical training programmes in Cambridge and London.
He was awarded an MRC Clinical fellowship researching in pelvic floor dysfunction and carried out further sub-specialist colorectal training fellowships to Sydney, Paris and St Mark's Hospital.
Mr Chan is actively involved in training at all levels including MB BS, MRCS, Intercollegiate FRCS and Royal College of Surgeons of England and is an invited speaker at national and international conferences.
Clinical interests and colorectal treatments for rectal cancer and pelvic floor disorders
Mr Chan has particular interest in ultra-low sphincter saving surgery for rectal cancer patients and the management of complex pelvic floor disorders (incontinence and constipation) with nerve stimulation therapies and dynamic graciloplasty.
He also specialises in the management of adolescent patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), inherited cancers and functional disorders.
