Kit is the senior gastrointestinal surgical consultant in Bristol and has worked at Frenchay NHS Hospital for the past eighteen years. He is a specialist in upper GI surgery and laparoscopy.
Mr Armstrong trained at Edinburgh University Medical School and qualified MBCHB in 1978. He completed his surgical training in Edinburgh, Cape Town, Manchester, Plymouth and Bristol, obtaining his FRCS in 1982. In 1990 he was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol where he continues in post today.
Clinical interests
Since his appointment as a consultant, Kit has developed a special interest in gastrointestinal surgery and was a pioneer in the development of laparoscopic surgery in the UK. His particular interests include laparoscopic gallbladder, bile duct and pancreatic surgery. Kit has performed over 3,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies with minimal postoperative complications and an extremely low conversion rate to open surgery. He also has a significant interest in pancreatitis and the treatment of jaundice.
Kit is one of the most experienced surgeons carrying out laparoscopic antireflux and hiatus hernia surgery (laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication) and has performed over 1,200 procedures to date. He is one of the leading exponents of complicated hiatus hernia surgery, including giant hiatus hernia and redo surgery. He also has extensive experience in laparoscopic splenectomy and surgery for achalasia. He continues to develop experience in laparoscopic bariatric surgery (for obesity) including gastric banding as a member of The Avon Obesity Service.
Kit has also more than 20 years experience in laparoscopic and open hernia repairs, which include inguinal, femoral, sportsman's hernia (Gilmore's groin), umbilical, incisional and recurrent hernias. He is the Lead Clinician for upper GI cancer in North Bristol and sees many patients with cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, biliary tract and pancreas
Research interests
At present Mr Armstrong is involved in research into laparoscopic and minimally invasive treatments for gastroesophageal reflux and gallstones. He has published extensively in the field of laparoscopic and GI surgery and was awarded an MD thesis in 1986 for research on pancreatitis.
