Why have laparoscopic gallstone and bowel surgery?

With advancements in technology and surgical techniques, it is now possible to carry out laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for the removal of gallstones and for a range of bowel conditions. 

Surgery is carried out through four or five small incisions, rather than through one large one that cuts through the skin and muscles.  This results in less bleeding and risk of wound infection, less scarring and a shorter recovery time for the patient.  The procedure also takes less time than traditional open surgery, and many conditions can be treated as day cases.
