Consultant Gastrointestinal Surgeon, Bristol and Cardiff: Mr Christopher Wong
Consultant Gastrointestinal Surgeon, Bristol and Cardiff: Mr Christopher Wong
A Bristol and Cardiff-based gastrointestinal surgeon with a special interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of conditions affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract, including gastro-intestinal reflux disease (GORD).

Mr Christopher Wong is Consultant Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals in Bristol.  He provides private surgery for gastrointestinal conditions at Spire Bristol Hospital and Spire Cardiff Hospital.

An experienced gastrointestinal surgeon in Cardiff and Bristol

Following his training in general surgery, Mr Wong chose to specialise in treating diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and endocrine system.  He is a highly skilled laparoscopic surgeon, always staying abreast of the latest developments in techniques in order to offer his patients the least invasive procedures possible.

Gastrointestinal conditions treated by Mr Christopher Wong

Mr Wong is able to offer diagnosis and treatment of a range of conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, including:

  • Crohn's disease
  • Colitis
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Gastro-intestinal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Pudendal nerve entrapment

Expert diagnosis of gastrointestinal problems

Endoscopy is the examination of the gastrointestinal tract using a flexible fibre optic probe that is passed into the body under varying degrees of anaesthesia or sedation.  Small instruments can be attached to the probes to carry out biopsies or minor surgical procedures.

Mr Wong is able to offer the full range of endoscopic techniques, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), providing a complete diagnostic service for the whole of the gastrointestinal tract and biliary tree.

Laparoscopic (keyhole) anti-reflux surgery

Gastro-intestinal reflux disease (GORD), where stomach acid leaks up into the oesophagus, occurs when the band of muscle at the junction between the oesophagus and the stomach, that effectively acts as a valve, fails.  Symptoms include heartburn, indigestion, a cough at night, gum problems, sore throat and, occasionally, severe chest pains.

GORD is most commonly caused by part of the stomach squeezing into the chest through a defect in the diaphragm (hiatus hernia).  Mr Wong offers effective treatment of GORD, repairing the hiatus hernia in a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure and creating an artificial high pressure zone in the lower oesophagus that acts as a one-way valve, preventing the stomach contents from refluxing up the oesophagus.
