Mr Tariq Ismail is a Colorectal Surgeon specialising in the treatment of a variety of bowel disorders, haemorrhoid surgery (including minimally invasive HALO surgery for piles), colonoscopy, bowel cancer and advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

 

About Tariq Ismail, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon

Tariq Ismail is a founding member of The Birmingham Bowel Clinic, which is the first private centre of excellence for managing bowel conditions in the West Midlands.

 

The Birmingham Bowel Clinic comprises of a team of highly qualified consultants (including specialists in oncology, pathology and radiology to provide a comprehensive and integrated service with a multidisciplinary approach to the management of all benign and malignant bowel conditions and offers investigations and  treatments for all major and minor bowel symptoms.

 

In addition Tariq Ismail specialises in the HALO procedure (Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation Operation which is the minimally invasive, virtually pain-free treatment for haemorrhoid sufferers.

 

Education and Training

Tariq Ismail obtained the FRCS qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1986 and then completed his surgical training in Birmingham, Hong Kong and at the National Cancer Institute, Tokyo. He was awarded the prestigious Sheldon Research Fellowship which led to the award of MD with Distinction for his Doctorate Thesis.

Current Position

In 1995 Tariq Ismail was appointed as Consultant Surgeon to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and as Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham where he has played an instrumental role in developing colorectal referral pathways, advanced colorectal laparoscopic surgery and enhanced surgical recovery in the West Midlands area.  He was one the first colorectal surgeons to perform SILS (Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery) for bowel cancer in the UK.

 

Tariq Ismail was pivotal in the introduction of CT colonography (“Virtual Colonoscopy”), Video Capsule Endoscopy (“pill Cam”), and laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery in the West Midlands.

 
He has also featured in the popular Channel 4 television series “Embarrassing Bodies” performing the minimally invasive procedure HALO on a chronic haemorrhoids sufferer, and also featured on “Don’t Die Young” performing laparoscopic surgery on a colon cancer patient.

Professional Memberships

Mr Tariq Ismail is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGB&I).

 

He has been Surgical Tutor, Chair of the Pan Birmingham Cancer Network Colorectal Group, Clinical Service Lead for Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Surgery and Examiner for the MRCS examination at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

                        

Tariq Ismail is also a proud member of the Fundraising Committee of the Bowel Disease Research Foundation, a charity promoting research, education and awareness in bowel diseases including bowel cancer.

 

Research and Publications

He has published widely on translational research in proteomics, gene therapy and biomarkers for colorectal cancer. He has been proudly awarded major research grants from Cancer Research UK, Medical Research Council, Wellcome Foundation for groundbreaking studies on early detection of bowel cancer.

 

Tariq Ismail and his colorectal research team have accepted a variety of academic awards including the prestigious Arderne Gold Medal by the Royal Society of Medicine, Syme Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Digestives Diseases Prize by the Association of Coloproctology.
