Ankle arthroscopy in Middlesex and West London
Miss Tross is highly experienced in the use of ankle
arthroscopy to investigate symptoms such as ankle pain, stiffness,
swelling or instability. By inserting a miniature telescope into the
ankle joint through a small incision she is able to view the joint
surfaces, soft tissues and ligaments of the ankle to definitively
diagnose the cause of a problem. Using specially designed instruments, she is also able to perform some therapeutic procedures arthroscopically, such as clearing out loose pieces of
cartilage, bone or inflamed tissue (debridement), removing bony spurs, and repairing or tightening torn or slack ligaments.
Expert ankle fusion surgery
When the pain and swelling associated with arthritis of the ankle
can no longer be managed with anti-inflammatory drugs or treatments such
as arthroscopic debridement, ankle fusion surgery is a good treatment option for patients who are still very active. The procedure involves
cutting back the damaged tissues on both sides of the joint as far as the
healthy bone and then holding the joint in a functional position with
screws until, ultimately, it fuses permanently.
Miss Tross is highly experienced in all forms of joint
repair surgery, including ankle fusion. The technique produces a more
robust and durable joint repair compared to ankle replacement surgery,
which generally needs revision after ten years and is not suitable for
very active patients. The downside of fusion surgery is that the ankle
is left stiff and immobile, although many patients do find that they can
return to their full range of activities, including sports such as
golf, walking, cycling, badminton and skiing.
