Expert treatment for sports injuries to the foot and ankle in Cardiff

Sprains and fractures to the foot and ankle are commonly sustained during sporting activities, often as the result of ligaments being overstretched or torn, overuse, direct impact or blows, or tripping on uneven ground.  Symptoms of a foot or ankle sprain or fracture may include pain, bruising and swelling, which can be alleviated initially by protecting and resting the affected area, applying ice and a compression bandage and keeping the foot elevated (PRICE therapy).  Any foot or ankle symptoms that are worse or fail to respond to PRICE therapy after 48 hours should be assessed by a doctor.

Mr Thomas offers rapid access to accurate diagnostic assessment of foot and ankle injuries using MRI, X-ray and ultrasound.  As Honorary Surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Blues, he has considerable expertise in the treatment of rugby sporting injuries, although he has treated patients from a wide variety of sporting disciplines and ability levels, including Olympic athletes.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of the foot

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of the foot is a new technique to correct foot problems such as bunions, arthritis of the big toe and deformities of the smaller toes.  In an X-ray guided procedure, special instruments are inserted through small incisions, avoiding damage to the soft tissues and the risks associated with a larger wound.  Usually performed as day surgery, MIS helps to promote early bone healing, accelerating recovery times.

Mr Rhys Thomas is one of only a few surgeons in the UK able to offer MIS of the foot, and was the first surgeon to perform the technique in Wales.  The procedure is not suitable for all cases of bunions and toe problems, however, and Mr Thomas is happy to provide his expert opinion in each individual case.
