Expert treatment for foot and ankle problems in Southampton

Trained in Cambridge, Oxford, London and Southampton, Mr Bowyer is a highly experienced orthopaedic surgeon with a special expertise in foot and ankle surgery.  His interest in the field developed during his career in the Army and in 1997 he founded a private foot and ankle service for people with foot and ankle injuries, sports-related conditions, arthritis and foot and toe deformities.  Working closely with physiotherapists and podiatrists, he aims to provide a comprehensive treatment service for his patients using the latest surgical and non-surgical techniques to restore comfort and mobility.

Bunion surgery in Southampton

A bunion is a bony deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe caused by the big toe pointing inwards towards the other toes on the same foot, pushing the first metatarsal bone outwards.  Bunions can lead to swelling and pain, exacerbated by footwear rubbing as the foot becomes deformed.  A number of non-operative treatments are available for bunions, including bunion pads and orthotics (devices placed inside the shoe to help realign the bones of the foot), but in cases where there are significant symptoms or the bunion is restricting activity, surgery may be recommended.

Mr Bowyer offers surgical correction of bunions, removing any overgrown tissue and realigning the bones of the big toe in a procedure tailored to the individual.  Patient satisfaction is high, with 80-90% of patients reporting that their surgery was successful.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy for Achilles tendonitis

A common sports injury, Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon connecting the heel bone to the two major calf muscles.  It is characterised by a dull or sharp pain close to the heel, and may limit ankle flexibility and cause redness or a cracking sound.  Treatment for Achilles tendonitis is initially conservative using painkillers, rest and ice.  Some cases do not respond to such interventions however, and physiotherapy and corticosteroid injections have traditionally been used as next line therapy.

Mr Bowyer also offers extracorporeal shock wave therapy, a non-invasive treatment method for connective tissue and fascia problems such as Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.  Small shock waves are applied to the affected area in a course of three sessions, breaking down injured tissue and stimulating the body's natural healing process.
