Mr Bowyer's orthopaedic training and medical background
Gavin Bowyer went to Cambridge University in 1979, to read Medical Sciences. He went on to Oxford University in 1982, to complete his clinical training. He joined the Army and underwent further surgical training in London and Southampton, and spent a busy year in the USA as a Fellow in the Shock Trauma Centre in Baltimore. He enjoyed a number of exciting postings on military tours of duty. He developed a major interest in the management of foot and ankle problems, especially after injury and in the active sports-person. Later NHS experience and training developed this further, with care of the whole range of foot and ankle conditions. Mr Bowyer has had a long association with Southampton University Hospitals, and after leaving the Armed Forces he took up a consultant post there in 1999.
Orthopaedic expertise, foot and ankle treatments offered in Southampton
Mr Bowyer treats a variety of orthopaedic conditions which may be treated with or without surgery, depending on the individual circumstances:
Orthopaedic publications and research
Mr Bowyer has written more than 40 papers on a variety of orthopaedic and trauma subjects, including the Instructional Course Lecture in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery on the management of gunshot wounds to the limbs. In 2010 he wrote a major review article on Adult Foot and Ankle Problems for GPs in training, published in the InnovAIT journal.
Mr Bowyer has also written a number of books and book chapters dealing with trauma and orthopaedic surgery, including two chapters on the regional orthopaedics of the foot and ankle, and injuries of the foot and ankle, in the major orthopaedic textbook Apley’s System of Orthopaedics and Fractures (Hodder Arnold, 2009).
Appointments, consultation and private treatment in the Southampton area
Mr Bowyer consults and operates at the Spire Southampton Hospital. Orthopaedic consultations can also be arranged at the Wessex Nuffield Hospital in Chandlers Ford and at Boyd Physiotherapy Associates in Lymington. In all instances, appointments should be made with Mr Bowyer's secretary at Spire Southampton Hospital using the contact details below.
A written referral from a general practitioner is normally required in order to make an appointment to see any consultant in either the NHS or in private practice. This will often be a requirement for your private medical insurers. In cases where you do not have a GP referral, perhaps if the referral or recommendation is made by a physiotherapist or podiatrist, then Mr Bowyer will seek your permission to keep your GP informed.
