Michael Wareing: Consultant Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgeon, Harley Street, London

Mr Wareing won the Sidney Scott Prize for Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) at Barts, later qualifying as a doctor in 1988.

During his general surgical postgraduate training, Mr Wareing held various busy posts in neurosurgery, general surgery and A&E, before taking up an ENT position at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. During this time he passed both the General Surgical and ENT Fellowships of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. Mr Wareing underwent his specialty ENT training at Guy's, King's & St Thomas’ Hospitals, and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, gaining valuable experience and expertise.

In 1997 he was awarded a prestigious TWJ Travelling Fellowship to San Francisco where he spent 7 months in the Laboratory of Molecular Otology, UCSF, studying inner ear gene therapy and performing new and exciting research on the roles of liposomes and viruses in introducing genetic material to the cochlea. In 1999 he was awarded the Skull Base Fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

In 2000, Mr Wareing was welcomed back to Barts, with his appointment as Consultant ENT Surgeon to St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals. He is also Lead Clinician in Otology, Ear Surgery, Acoustic Neuroma and Skull Base Surgery, and runs a specialist voice clinic and paediatric ear disease clinic.

In 2003 Mr Wareing took over the additional role of Lead Clinician for Otorhinolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery. He is in charge of the appointment and appraisal of ENT colleagues, both consultants and junior staff alike. He has wide ranging responsibilities for the education of medical students within their ENT attachment and also for GP postgraduate ENT education.

Mr Wareing has featured in radio shows, in articles in the Daily Mail and The Observer, and has written book chapters on a number of topics including the development of the ear, and on voice problems. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and is often invited to lecture in the UK and abroad.

In 2007 Mr Wareing was one of only a handful of ENT surgeons to appear in the Tatler Guide to Britain's 250 Best Private Doctors.

What to expect

Your initial appointment with Mr Wareing will last about 30 minutes and during this time he will take thorough notes regarding your medical history and undertake a clinical examination. The examination will vary according to the nature of your consultation and certain specialised investigations may be performed. Because of the high standard of equipment available at the clinic, a thorough assessment can usually be achieved in this initial appointment, saving you valuable time and limiting the need for follow up appointments. Special investigations performed at the time of the appointment may include an audiogram or tympanometry, ear microscopy or ear suction, rigid or flexible nasal or laryngopharyngeal endoscopy and videostroboscopy. All are undertaken by Mr Wareing himself.

Sometimes further tests are necessary, such as x-rays, blood tests, MRI scans, CT scans, ultrasound scans or allergy testing. The majority of tests are performed within The London Clinic and can usually be performed within 24 hours. Patients suffering from claustrophobia (a well recognised problem with MRI scans) are well catered for, with options including an open MRI scanner or the upright MRI scanner.

Referrals for private ENT surgery

Mr Wareing accepts self-referring patients as well as patients who have been referred by their GP. Referrals can either be faxed or emailed to Mr Wareing (see contact details). If your GP has given you the letter to pass on, please present it to Mr Wareing's secretary upon arrival. Some patients come to see Mr Wareing on personal recommendation from friends or colleagues. In such circumstances it is preferable that Mr Wareing communicates with your GP as this ensures he is aware of all relevant medical details. If you have other medical reports or test or investigation results please bring them along - it will help to avoid unnecessary duplication and will guide appropriate tests where necessary.

Mr Wareing regularly sees patients visiting from overseas, often on embassy recommendation. Please let us know if you require an interpreter. This can usually be arranged but the interpreter will charge a fee. The London Clinic has an International Office that may also help with this process.
