Laparoscopic adrenalectomy

Responsible for producing a number of vital hormones, including those that regulate blood pressure, salt and body fluid levels, sexual drive and sugar metabolism, the adrenal glands are small organs found near the top of each kidney.  They are also responsible for the production of the fight or flight hormone, adrenaline, and the neurotransmitter dopamine.

A number of benign and malignant conditions can affect the adrenal glands, causing them to produce high levels of hormones or cause pain as they grow.  The symptoms of an adrenal tumour vary according to which particular hormone is being overproduced, but can include swelling of the cheek and face, weight gain or weight loss, hypertension, thirst, palpitations, pallor or flushing, panic attacks and sweating.  Treatment for these conditions usually involves the surgical removal of the affected gland.

Mr Smith is skilled in laparoscopic adenalectomy, a minimally invasive technique to remove the adrenal gland through a small incision.  Most suited to benign adrenal tumours and hormonally inactive tumours that are found incidentally, the procedure is associated with a shorter hospital stay, lower incidence of complications and more rapid recovery from surgery compared to traditional, open surgery.

Thyroid surgery in Essex

Located in the neck, the thyroid gland produces the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine that control the body's metabolism and growth.  A number of conditions, including Graves' disease, toxic thyroid nodules and some forms of thyroid cancer can cause the thyroid to produce excess amounts of these hormones (hyperthyroidism) resulting in symptoms such as nervousness, anxiety, weight loss and swelling of the gland (goitre).

Mr Smith offers expert removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) or part of the thyroid gland (hemithyroidectomy) in cases of hyperthyroidism where a large goitre is present, and in those cases that have not responded to drug treatment or are unsuitable for radioiodine treatment.  He is also experienced in the use of the technique for the treatment of thyroid cancer.
