Dr Veronique Bataille MD PhD FRCP provides treatment for all skin conditions, including those in children. She specialises in the treatment of melanoma, other types of skin cancer, atypical mole syndrome, and family cancer syndromes associated with melanoma. Dr Bataille practises at Princess Grace Hospital, London and West Hertfordshire NHS Trust hospitals where she carries out regular dermatological procedures such as excision and curettage of skin cancers as well as diagnostic biopsies. Dr Bataille is the Skin Cancer Lead for her trust and the Network Lead for the Hertfordshire Skin Cancer Task Force.
Dr Bataille's training in dermatology
Dr Bataille trained at the Louvain Medical School in Brussels and graduated in July 1985 with magna cum laude. She started her dermatology training at St John's Institute of Dermatology in St Thomas’ Hospital in 1989. In 1993, Dr Bataille had the opportunity to spend several months in the Sydney Melanoma Unit, the busiest in the world. In 1994, she moved to St George's Hospital in London where she spent 2 years as a senior registrar also working in the Pigmented Lesion Clinic and Melanoma Clinic. She then moved to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in Holborn and the Royal London Hospital as a clinical research fellow where she completed her PhD on the genetic epidemiology of skin and eye melanoma in 1995, funded by Cancer Research UK. Dr Bataille became an accredited Consultant Dermatologist in 1996 and is on the specialist registry for dermatology of the UK General Medical Council. In 1996, she was appointed Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Dermatologist at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry where she continued her interest in the genetics of melanoma and other skin cancers.
Dr Bataille became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in May 2000. She has published many high impact articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented abstracts at many national and international meetings. In 2003, Dr Bataille was appointed as the Dermatology Consultant for L'Oreal Paris. Dr Bataille is also a Senior Clinical Research Fellow at King's College where she carries out her research on the genetics of skin diseases.

Research interests - genetics of melanoma
Over the last 18 years, Dr Bataille has been instrumental in setting up a number of projects looking at the influence of genes and the environment on melanoma risk. As a member of the EORTC Melanoma Group, Dr Bataille has been involved in several European collaborations looking at melanoma risk factors which were funded by the EEC.
At West Herts NHS Trust, Dr Bataille is in charge of several projects looking at the genetics of melanoma and acne which are funded by Cancer Research UK and the British Skin Foundation. Dr Bataille also works at King's College, London at the St Thomas’ campus where she is responsible for the skin research programme at the Twin Research & Genetic Epidemiology Unit. This research has been looking at the relative contribution of genes and the environment on skin diseases such as eczema, acne, psoriasis and melanoma. This has led to many publications over the last 10 years and is mainly funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council (MRC). Recent publications in Nature Genetics ensued from 10 years of work at the Twin Research Unit.
