Expertise and treatments offered
Dr Ashton's practice covers all aspects of general dermatology. He has a special interest in dermatological surgery – the removal of both skin cancers and benign skin lesions. Where possible surgery is carried out at the first consultation so that patients do not need to return for an extra visit.
Research interests
Dr Ashton's research interests have been in the effects of retinoids (vitamin A derivatives used in the treatment of acne and psoriasis) on the skin for which he wrote his Doctor of Medicine thesis – Retinoid induced epidermal hyperplasia.
More recently he has been interested in computer-aided diagnosis in dermatology and collected clinical data in over 2000 patients to create the database for the DERMIS program which was written by Dr Gorden Brooks and is part of the EMIS GP practice management system. This led onto devising the ‘flow charts’ that are used by general practitioners to help with the diagnosis of skin complaints in the textbook Differential Diagnosis in Dermatology.
At present he remains interested in teaching dermatology to general practitioners and has an interest in medical photography. He is presently running Education Days in dermatology for the Wessex GP post-graduate faculty.
