Mr Tariq Ismail, MD, FRCS, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon

Tariq Ismail, a specialist bowel and colorectal surgeon, trained at the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff. He obtained his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1986 and completed his medical training in the West Midlands. He undertook a clinical sabbatical at the National Cancer Institute in Tokyo before being appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery at University of Birmingham.

 

He was a Sheldon Fellow for 2 years which led to the award of MD with Distinction. He has published widely on translational research in proteomics, gene therapy and biomarkers for colorectal cancer.

 

His research team have received a number of awards including The Arderne Gold Medal by the Royal Society of Medicine, Syme Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and the Digestive Diseases Prize by the Association of Coloproctology. He was pivotal in introducing CT colonography, Video Capsule Endoscopy (“Pill Cam”) and laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Birmingham.

 

He has also played a key role in developing colorectal referral pathways and enhanced surgical recovery protocols. He has been Surgical Tutor, Chair of the Pan Birmingham Cancer Network Colorectal Group, clinical service lead for the Endoscopy Unit and Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is currently an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

 

Mr Ismail is a recognised expert in advanced laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of colon cancer as well as benign diseases such as diverticulitis, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and rectal prolapse. In addition common colorectal procedures such as haemoroidectomy, anal fissures and fistula surgery. He also has a large colonoscopy practice.
