Dr Amanda Varnava is a consultant cardiologist at Imperial College who offers private cardiology services in Central London and Hertfordshire. Amanda Varnava's training and experience in cardiology
Dr Varnava completed her undergraduate medical training at Oxford University and then qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital with triple honours. During her training she was awarded several honours and the Weitzman cardiology prize.
Following this she embarked on a cardiology training programme at the UK's leading cardiac centres, working at the Royal Brompton Hospital, St George’s Hospital, and Barts and the London Chest Hospital. In 2005 she took up her consultant post at Imperial College Healthcare Trust (one of the leading UK centres for cardiology) and West Herts Hospital Trust.

Areas of expertise in cardiology and the management of heart disease
Dr Varnava’s practice encompasses all aspects of adult cardiology, in particular the management of ischaemic heart disease (angina and the prevention of heart attacks), heart failure, and the evaluation of palpitations and faints. She is also experienced in the management of heart disease in women and pregnancy and is the only cardiologist working with the Portland Hospital - the country’s leading private hospital for women and children.
She is also expert in the evaluation and management of patients with hypertension and the non-invasive assessment of cardiovascular risk (including use of the latest state of the art CT coronary angiography).
Her area of specialist expertise is the inherited cardiac conditions, which may predispose young people to risk. As a result of her extensive experience she has established and leads the Inherited Cardiac Conditions service at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare Trust.
She is also experienced in the evaluation of sports people and preparticipation screening and is the Football Association cardiologist for several premiership football teams including; West Ham, Fulham, Spurs, Watford and Stoke City Football Clubs.
Research and training in cardiology
Dr Varnava has an active research interest into the MRI findings and genetics of cardiomyopathies. Her main area of interest is the assessment of ventricular ectopics and the associated genetic findings.
Dr Varnava is involved in the specialised training of cardiologists, junior doctors, and cardiac nurses / physiologists. She organises regular training programmes in cardiology for GPs. She actively lectures at both a national and international level and has been interviewed by several national newspapers and TV (including the 10 O'Clock News).
